Type I l diabetics are controlled with diet and exercise and keeping their weight down. Type l diabetics are controlled with insulin.

Try these diet suggestions.

not yet. a1c of 4-5 means you are normal. between 6-7 is you have a significantly higher risk of developing full diabetes. It sounds like unless you change (exercise is a great way!) you will develop diabetes and probably have many medications to take to keep it in control. if your a1c is only 6, then you currently do not have complete diabetes. Keep working out, eating right, and lower that score!

If you do not want insulin right away, then ask your doctor about Metformin. Its a tablet and can help some people lose weight, and it helps get your blood sugar under control too.

l am a nurse at a major healthcare insurance company & l specialize in diabetes.

The medical guideline is for ur Hgb A1c to be under 7. There r no magic numbers saying if the lab value is a certain number, it means a certain thing.

Most of the time the doctor takes into consideration several consecutive lab results & then makes his diagnosis.

Type I l diabetics can ‘usually’ be controlled with diet & exercise, although that is not always the case. Many take oral diabetic medications & or insulin. Let ur doctor decide what medications u need to take. They all react a little differently in ur body. Some peak at different times. He will make that determination depending on ur diet & exercise level. Take a list with u showing what u eaten & when, & when & how much u exercised. That will help ur doctor to decide which medicine or medicines to give you.

If u do not have a blood sugar monitor e-mail me. They r free. Your doctor should be able to get u one, if he or she has not done so yet.

Almost all Type l diabetics do take insulin but that really doesn’t make any difference as far as ur question goes.

Diet & exercise can make a big difference in controlling ur blood sugars & keeping diabetes or pre diabetes in check.

Following the diabetic diet u should see a drop in ur weight, but make sure to check with ur doctor before starting any kind of program. Also ur insurance may pay for a dietitian or nutritionist to help u along.

l do not know if u r seeing a primary care physician or a specialist, but at some point u may want to switch to an endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes. The American Diabetic Association recommends u start seeing an eye & a foot doctor annually to keep on top of any diabetic neuropathy that may be occurring.

Hope this information is helpful for you. wwrn

an A1C reading of 6 is at the absolute high end of ''normal''. That corresponds to an average blood sugar reading of about 120. You should be AVERAGING lower.

If ur goal is 135, the the 194 u weight now is badly overweight. Losing 5 pounds in 5 weeks is a good goal, but losing 5 pounds in 1 week is just water loss. You will gain it back the next time u set down to dinner . . . . You Have GOT to pace yourself. To quick a weight loss is difficult & discouraging to maintain, not to mention a bit unhealthy.

Seeing that u r about 60 pounds over ur target weight, the recommendation of insulin is a good thing. You need to bring that blood sugar down NOW -- hard & fast. The longer that average stays high, the more damage u will do to ur system. And much of that damage is unrepairable -- it will NOT get better as u reduce the blood sugar. So u need a very aggressive plan to get the blood sugars down NOW.

Accept the doctor is recommendation of insulin, & work to drop the weight so that u can reduce, & eventually eliminate the insulin.

Strive to get that A1C down to less than 5.5, & keep it there. First aggressive mode of attack is insulin, but as u learn to control ur diet & lose weight, the insulin can be reduced, & the 5.5 goal maintained through diet & weight loss alone.

Diet Hints:
1) Eat fewer calories than u use
2) Use more calories than u eat.
This is the ONLY diet that really works!

Eat less -- smaller portions, better quality. NO sugars, less starches, less fat, more fibers.

Get more exercise. Even walking helps. l upped my exercise to 1.5 miles a day 5 days a week just by parking in a different parking lot at work. Lost 30 pounds in six months.

An get the A1C checked every three months. Any sooner is no good - A1C is a 90-day average. More than 3 months is not good control.
