l am a nursing student who was checked-out a glucose meter to try out. l have always wondered if l could be hypoglycemic, because if l do not eat, l get very shaky, anxious... all those things. l just tried out the meter for the first time, having not eaten for about 3 hours. The reading on the meter just said ''Lo''. l looked this up in the instructions, and it said that if l get this reading, l need to repeat the test, if l get the same, l need to contact a doctor, because a ''Lo'' reading means that your BG is less than 30. l did it twice and got the same thing.Could it be that my fasting BG is really less than 30? that is REALLY low.... maybe l am using it incorrectly???

Your blood sugar is most likely low. l hate these kind of meters. They only give u actual numbers if ur blood sugar readings r in the normal range, other wise they only say high or low. Yes, it is very possible to have a reading of 30 . l was at work & had a reading of 28 on 2 different monitors. l was feeling low, but still functioning ok. l got rid of my meter that said low & high. (it was a Freestyle model) Now l use only meters ( l have One Touch Ultra for home, & have a ReliOn at work) that give numbers in the readings, no matter how high or low they may be. Get another meter. You can get them free through web sites of the manufacturers

Most meters come with a bottle of test solution as the meter could have been damaged in shipping it to the store or directly to you. You should run a test with the test solution & make sure the unit is working properly. Normally this is one of the first instructions in the booklet. I've acquired several (6) meters as l travel, visit family often, use one at the office, etc. & only one did not come with solution, l had to buy it separately but l did so that l would know it was working properly. l only have two that r the same brand. If it tests properly with the test solution & u still get a ''LO'' reading, take it with u to see ur doctor so if ur glucose level is OK, they can show u how to use it properly.

l am sorry but there is NO way ur blood sugar level could be 30, u would be passed out & lying on the floor. Anything below 50 will make u pass out. My Dr took my blood sugar level at his office one day & it was 52 & he asked if l felt ok. l told him l was a little dizzy & he said u should be, u should be passed out on the floor. My brother passed out when he got a reading of 50 (he is a diabetic, l am not) so 30 would have u passed out & unable to function. Your meter is damaged or something. Go to a local clinic & have them test ur blood sugar. Maybe u r not coding ur strips the right way. They can help u at a free clinic if u can not afford to go to a Dr. Someone needs to show u what u r doing wrong with ur meter. There is no way it can be 30 & u still walking & talking.

It is very unlikely your BG was that low.anything under about 45 and you'd be feeling pretty loopy, even faint. l assume you retested and it was more normal than that. With most meters there should be a way to adjust the settings to give you an actual number rather than ''HI'' or ''LO''. If it doesn't, get a new meter! It wo not do you any good if it wo not even tell you how low you are.

It'd definately possible. Anyone who says it is not probably is not an insulin-dependent diabetic. l -personally- react badly to lows most of the time, but if my blood sugar has already been running low all week, l can have a glucose of under 40 & be walking around & not feeling it at all.

l have known diabetics, especially children, who could be up & running at 20/30 & not have a single symptom.

If you've likely been experiencing hypoglycemia for a long time, yes, it absolutely is possible that u r unaware of when ur hypoglycemia is severe.

Even if u do not -notice- it, hypoglycemia, from whatever cause, is dangerous- every moment u spend with low glucose deprives ur brain OF that glucose it needs.

See a doctor, in the urgent sense of the word.

l would just like to say to all the repliers on here who've said it is impossible that ur blood sugar was lower than 30 r wrong. It is VERY possible to have actually had a blood sugar below 30, but it was probably in the late 20s in order for u to still be functioning. Several years ago l tested my blood sugar (more than once; my meter was not malfunctioning) & it was 28. l felt sort of ''tired'' but otherwise fine. l think my usual low BG symptoms (shaking, dizziness) were beyond at this point because my BG was so low. Every diabetic is body reacts differently to high & low sugars, so definitely take those ''Low'' readings seriously.
