my parents NEVER told me that l have chances of getting diabetes or to have a healthy nutrition...But l do know that my grandma has it,she had it at an old age(type2).So l just discovered that very little time ago,l love food,l love baking, chocolate, sweets, that is just how my parents raised me.My mom used to buy me candy everyday to take to school since the food there was disgusting, she gave me a pack of chips,2chocolate bars, with a pack of smarties and juice. Now that I am older,l know that it increases my chances of having diabetes. It would be a nightmare coz l just LOVE baking and eating sweets, recently l started exercising:twice a week l do indoor cycling classes for 45mins(it is EXHAUSTING) and once a week l walk briskly for 20mins.l ALWAYS take the stairs and dance a little everyday!l do not drink soda,i do not add sugar to tea, coffee etc,l just love eating fruits and cakes, chocolate, junk like all teens.l have NEVER been overweight,I am just a little chubby.l am 13soon 14.None of my parents, uncles, aunts, cousins have it as l said I am not overweight but my stomach area has always been bloated no matter how much l exercise.l heard that stomach fat increases chances of getting diabetes in overweight people,Is it still the case in healthy weight people?

Your grandma has Type 2, which people get when they are older.more and more kids are being diagnosed with Type 2, these kids are sedentary(they do not exercise), and they eat anything except veggies. You are exercising, you should do something for 30 minutes every day. You can still bake and eat chocolates just do it in moderaion read the serving amount on the package or in the recipe and stick to it. You already have an advantage just by asking questions.

If u r concerned about being diabetic,.Get to the doctor immediately & get tested for ur A1c which is ur blood sugar. My grandmother & father was type 2 diabetics. l never would know l was a diabetic until 2 years ago. You can still have chocolate & sweets but use it in moderation.Instead of chocolate, pick up a piece of fruit. They have baked pita chips & baked chips which they r good. It is good u r exercising,Walking is a excellent exercise Start eating leafy greens such as spinach, escarole, endive & incorporate vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, asparagus You r probably saying''YUCK'' but if u r at risk like u say,it will affect u in the long run.. l seen my own father lose his eyesight, lost a leg & even suffered a stroke due to diabetes & he was careful on his food choices.

Heredity does play a part in one is chances of getting diabetes but not an essential factor. What matters eventually is the life style of the person. In your case, there is no point in doing a post-mortem of what went on in the past but look forward with hope and take preventive measures such as reducing the intake of cerltain food especially sugary stuff, and going for a thorough medical check up to ascertain the exact situation.

The exact causes of type 2 diabetes aren’t completely understood, but it is known that the disease has a strong hereditary component. Individuals who have a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes have 10 to 15% chance of developing the disease (the risk is much higher if the sibling is an identical twin). Environmental factors like an inactive lifestyle or poor diet may act as a trigger for someone with a genetic tendency towards type 2 diabetes. Other potential causes of type 2 include chronic stress, low birth weight (and associated fetal malnourishment), & gene mutations. # Diabetes risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes include: Overweight or obesity. Having a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or more # Heredity. Having a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes # Ethnicity Being of African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian American, Pacific Islander or Latino American descent # Gestational diabetes # A history of gestational diabetes, or having at least one baby weighing more than 9 pounds at birth # Hypertension. High blood pressure of 140/90 mm Hg or higher # Poor cholesterol profile. HDL cholesterol (''good'' cholesterol) levels of 35 or lower and/or triglyceride levels of 250 or higher # Inactivity. Living a sedentary lifestyle (i.e.,exercising less than three times a week) # Being an older adult. Approximately 18.4% of Americans over age 65 have type 2 diabetes # Having diagnosed prediabetes
According to the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 80% of people with type 2 diabetes r overweight or obese (i.e., a BM l of 25 or higher). Here’s why excess fat increases insulin resistance: # Fat cells have fewer insulin receptors (the place where insulin binds to open the cell to glucose) than muscle cells. # Fat cells release free fatty acids, & free fatty acids interfere with glucose metabolism. # Excess glucose that can’t be used by the cells for energy is stored as body fat, increasing the cellular mass that the pancreas is trying to “feed” via insulin. In overweight people, insulin production is increased to meet.

Over the years ur body has become accustomed to eating those types of foods & when deprived of them u start to have cravings..The answer is to ween yourself off them to make that necessary lifestyle change, it wo not be easy but it needs to be done.
As for the diabetes we can not tell u if u will develop it but it runs in ur family & that is the most important factor but if u do develop it, it will be because those foods will be a contributing factor.....It is time to start eating properly.

l did not have very many people in my family that had it. My grandfather did but he was morbidly obese. My sister and l both got diagnosed at the age of 20. Try to track symptoms, like if you are urinating a lot, hungry all the time, extreme thirst ect. If any of these apply to you, it does not hurt to go get checked out by a doc. They will be able to tell you even if you are borderline and just need to control it by diet and exercise. Best of luck
