Father is starting Dialysis tomorrow.Trying to figure out life expectancy rates after people start dialysis. He seems depressed and worried.l need information on what his life is going to be more like after he starts? Any ? Ideas? Can people live on dialysis for awhile or is this the beginning ofa very short Journey?

For years. My father did. When he did pass away it was due to heart failure and not his kidneys.

l wish l could tell you more. But the life expectancy l believe is 10 years.. But of course other things factor in there. Such as their cooperation to treatement and how well treatment is going.. You can also check a library and get some nursing books or dialysis books, maybe Dr. books.

l have been on dialysis for almost 3 years (in March it will be 3 years!)
Sorry to hear about ur father!
There is no real time table for it, l have T1 DM & am also blind, l have a LE of 4 years, BUT now l also have a stomach diease. & l really think it has saved my life, l have lost 80 some pounds (in 2 years) & just dont eat much at all.
l think the first few months were the worst ever in life! then l got my fissule on my arm (Has he got that?) & things started to get better.
l am still in & out of the hospital all the time l just got out again yesterday, my heart has went very badly. (it goes with the dialysis too)
He has to pick his team just by watching the teams with other people in his shift Then he gets to pick & choose his team.

What does his Dr say? l have found that if u r up front with them then they r up front with you! Try talking to his dialysis team THEY r ur best ever! If he is with a DAVITA team he is in good hands l know l am

Sorry but thats why it is called End Stage Renal Failure, In the Medi-care (USA) the life expectancy is only 3 years & IF u live past that then u MUST & have too! sign up with them. l have blue cross from my husbands job & now l have to give it up! OH how l hate doing this!!!
There is a woman that has been on it for over 6 years but there is no diabetes or anything else with her. l think she is the longest running in my clinic.
Also here r some websites to check out
davita.com
ihatedialsis.com
Good Luck & tell ur dad Good Luck too!
