You need to eat only low carbohydrate foods or whole foods. You must avoid starches & sugars. That means no bread, bagels, pasta or cake. No sugar sweetened soda or sugary drinks of any kind. If u feel u must have bread go with whole grain bread. Instead of white rice use brown rice. Eating whole grains is good for many pre diabetics but not all.
If u have a blood glucose meter note what u eat & take ur level 2 hours after eating. If the sugar level is high u r eating something that is not right for you.
Eating lots of non starchy vegetable r good & limit ur fruits to different kinds of berries. Try to eat the carbohydrate foods early in the day so u can work them off.
Drinking green tea & if u r old enough a glass of red wine at night helps prevent full blown diabetes.
Eating 5 or 6 small meals instead of 2 or 3 big meals is important. It helps to keep u r sugar levels even.
You need regular vigorous exercise, both aerobic, like running & anaerobic, like weight lifting. That helps keep ur insulin resistance low. In many cases pre diabetic means ur body is building a resistance to using ur natural insulin.
If u carry ur weight around ur middle work on losing some weight & exercise. Fat around the middle increases insulin resistance.
Check out drmirkin.com for the DASH diet guidelines.

Leslie got the most of it. Check with ur doctor if he wants u to check ur blood sugars at home. But l do not agree with not eating white rice, sure, brown is better for you, but u can eat white in the correct portion.
No more empty calories. Ever. No sugared drinks at all.
You should be on a diabetic diet, just as if u were already diabetic.
Recommended is 5-6 small meals a day, spreading the protein & the carbs evenly between them. That way ur sugars stay fairly even, no highs, no lows, & u have the energy to burn off the next meal.
A bedtime snack/last meal of the day must have protein in it.
Never ever go beyond 6 hours since the last meal, except during the night, & eat breakfast, & eat it as soon after u get out of bed as u can, even to the point of having at least part of it already prepared, or have some healthy grab & eat foods available. l am sitting here with my yogurt right now, & l will have my banana soon. And since it is a large one, that will be all l have this morning, no extra carbs.
Get off ur butt & execise, recommended is a 1/2 hour of exercise at least 3x/week of steady aerobic exercise, & work up to exercising 6-7 days a week, & increase ur time, too.
Lose weight, get down into the recommended weight range for ur height. This one thing will ward off diabetes better than anything else.
eatright, diabetic association, diatetic association, nih.gov,[go to medline when u get to the site], healthy choices & mypyramid r all good sites for info.
One thing that helps me a lot is to find some good old fashioned exchange lists. It gives lists of related foods, & how much of it to eat for a certain amount of calories. Like it will say fruits, & give the serving amount for a person on a 1500 calorie diet. So it would say fruit exchange, & give u a list of fruits & for instance say banana 1/2, meat 3 oz of chicken. So easy to choose from the list in each cataogory & go buy it & eat it.
See ur doctor to give u the amount of calories u should eat in a day. And make him tell u if u need a reducing diet, or a maintanence diet. There might be diabetic classes in ur area, check with ur doctor & when he does not know, call around. Your local hospital might teach them. And go & listen & take notes.
And u did not say how old u are, if u r old enough to have ur own insurance, or r still on ur parent is policy. Either way, check the benefits, some companies pay for weight loss programs, & have educational phone programs that u might qualify for. CIGNA has one, so does Blue Cross Blue shield, but u have to check it out & qualify for the program[s].
And get busy right now, today. For every extended not watching ur diet period that u have now, u r shortening ur life, & opening the door for the terrible side effects of uncontrolled diabetes that will come later in ur life. Do not mean to scare u [oh yes l do] but do not come back here in 20 years telling us u have lost most of ur vision, a leg, some fingers & toes, ur kidneys have shut down & u r on dialysis[look it up, & be afraid]. And start the heart healthy diet too, that one is easier, limit the fatty foods u eat, do not use grease to cook in, use olive oil, do not add salt to things, & eat whole grain foods.
Finally, make sure u diet is balanced, u eat healthy foods, from every group every day. Do not buy into these people who tell u not to eat rice, or flour. These foods r fine to eat, just in moderation, & as a part of ur diet.
Gee, u can even have a sweet treat once in awhile, u just have to include it into the daily calorie plan.
Good luck, & start now.

l am pre-diabetic and watch very carefully what l eat. l eliminated all sugary drinks, white food(bread, potatoes, rice)pasta, cut down on sweets and exercise a great deal more than l used to. l also check my sugar daily with a kit purchased at a local pharmacy.
