l have for a few years been having all the symptoms of diabetes, so l went for diabetes test a couple of days ago at 11am in the morning, it read at 5.3 on the scale, and the lady said it was fine, however l hadnt eaten or drank anything for at least 18 hours, so does that make a difference as she didnt ask me.
Gail, l had this done at Lloyds Pharmacy (Chemist) in the UK. Not my doctors, you can just go in and have it done free they prick your finger.

And your answer, is very very confusing lol. Read it, its a hard one to follow.

If the 5.3 is your A1c, that is right in the middle of the normal range. You are fine. By the way, the only way to be diagnosed with diabetes is through blood tests. Symptoms for diabetes could easily be other things.

If the test you refer to was an A1C it is an average of your sugars over the last few months. 5.3 is perfectly normal for an A1C. Hope this Helps.

Are u sure she did not know? She probably did but just did not tell you. When ur Doctor ordered the test, someone must have told u to fast beforehand. Maybe the nurse? The lady who did the test probably assumed that u were told by someone that u must fast before coming in. If u were not told by anyone then u need to call ur Doctor & leave a message for the nurse. Just say u forgot to mention that u had been fasting for 18 hours when u did the test but forgot to tell someone. l would only do this if u were not told by anyone in the office that u needed to fast. If u were told, just not by the person who tested you, u can assume she knows simply because it is a requirement for that specific test. Hope that helps clear it up for you!

If it was at Lloyds it will just have been a spot fingerprick test, NOT an HbA1c (a lab-analysed blood test that shows an average blood glucose over the past couple of months).

The 5.3mmol/l in itself does not indicate diabetes, but u should talk to ur doctor and, if there is reason to do so, s/he may arrange a glucose tolerance test (GTT). This involves drinking a measured amount of Lucozade with fingerprick tests over several hours to check that ur body is processing the glucose properly.

5.3 is ok, but you should probably see your doctor and ask for an HbA1c test, which is far more accurate and is not affected by fasting or not fasting. It reflects your average blood sugar over the last 3 months.

Talk to your doctor about your symptoms regardless of what your test results are. He may need to do further tests to find out why you are having these symptoms.
