l have been diagnosed and treating for 3 years.am 68 yrs old and my a1c is 6.6 .l follow a pretty fair diet and avoid sweets. l find l go a week or so and things are great. Then it seems like l have a day from hell. l get readings like 239250 just for that day.Is it normal to have this kind of day once in a while?

once in a rare while yes.the body reacts to different stressors with different usage of insulin and the blood sugars will be erratic, this is why you are diabetic, part of the process.

no! l do not think that is normal. But of course u did not say what ur readings for the good days.If u r staying around 110 , then absolutely this is not normal. What also bothers me is ur statement'' l follow a pretty fair diet''. That really tell me u r not really keeping sugar really under control.

What is the Somogyi effect?
Also known as “rebound hyperglycemia” & named after the physician who first described it, the Somogyi effect is a pattern of undetected hypoglycemia (low blood glucose values of less than 70) followed by hyperglycemia (high blood glucose levels of more than 200). Typically, this happens in the middle of the night, but can also occur when too much insulin is circulating in the system. The cause of the Somogyi effect is said to be “man-made”—that is, a result of insulin or diabetes pills working too strongly at the wrong time.

During periods of hypoglycemia, the body releases hormones (glycogen & epinephrine) which send signals to the liver to release stored glucose. The end result is that the glucose level can swing too high in the other direction, causing hyperglycemia.
