My mom was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and she is 61 and a little ditsy so she does not remember everything that the Doctor/Diatition told her and what not. I am making her food for her cause she is staying with me after just getting out of a 4 day hospital stay cause her blood sugar was over 500! What a why to find out that you have diabetes huh! ? Anyway l kind of feel like I am in the dark here a little bit as far as portions and what she can eat. l do not know how many carbs she can have in a day or how many she can have at each meal. I am not sure what she can have for snacks and all that good stuff. Anyone know of any good free online resources to get this basic info from? I am going to make an appointment to see a Diatition (or how ever you spell that).with her again so l can get the info on what to feed her but untill then any good tips or anything would be very helpful. Thank you!

The FDA recommends that u get 50% of ur calories from carbohydrates. The NAS (National Academy of Science's) Institute of Medicine, based on thousands recent of scientific studies, recommend a slightly different approach. They recommend that adults get 45-65% of their calories from carbohydrates. But, they both agree on the kind of carbs u should eat.
The important thing is to eat complex carbohydrates instead of simple carbohydrates because they will not spike ur sugar. True ''whole grains'' can be eaten without impacting ur sugar also. The best way to find out how many carbs u can have is to test ur blood prior to eating & then again two hours later.
Humans do not seem to have a single perfect diet. People all over the world live on all kinds of different diets. We humans r marvelously adaptive in the foods we can eat. It does not seem that we can count on science to say exactly how we should eat. From a general diet point-of-view, the opinion on carbs seems to be all over the map.

Meeting with the dietician will be good, take plenty of notes & do not be afraid to ask her to make copies of things or repeat things u do not understand. It is complicated!
Type 2 is r usually given a target amount of carbs not to exceed at each meal, it is not a per day thing. Her doc probably told her how much, but it is different for everyone. So let is say for example that it is 35g of carbs per meal. That is a regular-sized sandwich, or some crackers & a piece of fruit, or a small bowl of oatmeal. Get a book on carb counting & get familiar with the carbs on the foods she likes to eat, & start analyzing the ''Nutrition Facts'' panel on foods, then make modifications as needed to keep her carbs at that target level. Let is say she really likes pasta. Limit her to 1 cup of it, then add some veggies in with it to add more fiber & bulk. If she drinks soda, transition her to diet over the course of a week. If she likes juice, transition her to the ''light'' versions u can get now.

You or your Mom should call the dietitian again and see what she said. Diet requirements are different for every person.
Your Mom can eat all the foods on this planet. She needs to learn to count carbohydrates.
Perhaps a class on diabetes and/or a support group would help. Subscribe to several diabetes magazines.
Good luck

Okay l try to limit mine to 15 carbs per meal and sometimes not even that . some folks do 30 carbs per meal and then you have to figure out how much insulin to take to cover that . l reccomend you read the book using insulin by john walsh . it helps you understand insulin intake and carb ratio . good luck and many blessings to your mom .
