l am going to the doctor tomorow to get a physical and my dad suggested that l get tested for diabetes since it runs in my family (dad, grandma, uncle). but l am kinda embarassed to ask him to test me for it (idk why l am scared to ask but l am) should l ask him or just wait and have him test me later? (i am often tired, get headaches a lot, have bas eye sight, my eyes get blurry alot, and l get that weird restless leg syndrome feeling in my legs at night) what should l do?!

You definatley should ask, if it runs in the famaily and your having some symptons then you need to be checked. Maybe your fine but you dont know so if there is a problem the sooner its found the better. Theres no need to be embaressed thats what your doctors there for and they want you to tell them about medical history or if your not feeling well, so dont worry the doctors there to help. Get it checked.

You should ask your doctor to do the test. You should not be embarrassed to ask your doctor about anything when it comes to your health.

l think ur father is trying to help u out. When u have some things which r not normal for you, & u do not feel right, the best thing to do is have a full blood panel done. They take some blood & check for multiple blood level possible problems. Diabetes is one, but many other things might show up which they can treat u for. Just be sure to tell the doctor about all ur symptoms so they know what to look for, & also that diabetes runs in ur family. That is nothing to be embarrased about, it is just part of life. Asking for the full blood test will allow u not to be embarrased & will give u an excellent overall picture of ur health.

You r not supposed to eat before the full blood work, call ur doctor & see if u can add the blood work & ask about the eating beforehand.

You should ask - if the doc does not do the test anyway. l do not know if the doc has got ur family history, Normally they do like to keep a record of patients' family history of conditions such as heart disease & diabetes. But u may need to draw their attention to it.

So if you're worried about asking straight out, u could simply ask if s/he feels u should be looking out for any symptoms of diabetes because of ur dad, grandmother & uncle.

You will be mentioning the headaches, legs & blurry eyesight anyway. wo not you?

If all that in itself does not prompt a diabetes test (it will probably be a urine test) & some discussion of the risk factors, then explain that u r a little concerned, & would they please do a check & tell u what to look out for.

My experience is that doctors would much prefer to hear concerns straight out & deal with them. What actually makes it more difficult for them is not to hear the facts & ur worries.

Do not be scared to ask, especially if it runs in ur family. Maybe you're afraid ur Doctor will tell u that u have it. l am a third generation diabetic. My grandmother was on insulin, my father was on pills & so am I. It definitely would be better for u to catch it now so u can the necessary lifestyle adjustments instead of waiting for diabetes to take it is toll on ur body & believe me l know what it does. My best friend Tom is almost blind from glaucoma brought on by diabetes. Good Luck & have a great life.
